[Project 1b] Precedent Studies

[Project 1b] Precedent Studies

In order to proceed to the next phase of the project, student required to do a background research on a subject matter related to community interest and obsession. Student to determine the essence, meaning, determine the process and function, emphasize the importance of meaningful and multi-layered cultural exchange and immersion into another culture. By understanding a selected community of target audience, students are to explore and engage themselves with their culture and lifestyle in producing the info graphic sketches. Students need to review the propose subject, investigate the essence, re-charge the energy and function to suits the propose site.

This is a continuation from the previous project in which we are tasked to dig a research on the subject matter related to community chosen. We are to determine the process and function, emphasize the importance of meaningful and multi-layered cultural exchange and immersion into another culture. By understanding a selected community of target audience, we are to explore and engage ourselves with their culture and lifestyle in producing the infographic sketches and diagram.

My group has chosen the subject "ART + CULTURE (Penang Street Art + Chulia Street Night)" as our research topic. We also chose Popiah skin and Tau Sa Pia to research on for the intangible culture task. Check out our ART & CULTURE VIDEO for this task too!

Through this project, I experienced the beauty of Penang's old town heritage site firsthand, through all those long walks along the streets of the old part of Georgetown. I've been to Penang before, but since it was a family trip, we mostly use grab transportation in order to reach certain places (and we also live in the city part), so besides its delicious hawker street foods, Penang never left me any other impression until this study trip. During this trip we were only allowed to take public transportation such as the trishaw, public bus, rent a bike or walk. Since our designated areas are walking distance, we decided to just walk, so the more we walk the more we can eat later. But all those walk walk walk definitely is more tiring than we ever imagined, especially if some of us don't know how to ride a bike (like me), don't understand the bus route, so we can only walk all day. However, all this day-long-walk is definitely worth it, because we experience the slow-paced life in Penang, contrary to the fast-paced busy life in Sunway, along the way we found many attractions (Penang's famous street arts that are everywhere), unique souvenir/hand-craft shops, and food stalls (which every so often we stopped for a break). And also due to our assignment, the small details in Penang that we normally don't really look at twice, we are now more aware of. In conclusion, this study trip gave me the opportunity to rewind from the fast-paced modern busy life to relax a little and appreciate the allure of an old town in Georgetown Penang that we usually fail to appreciate.
